I went to my first Rails conference over the weekend. I really wasn’t sure what to expect but I was looking forward to it, partially because it wasn’t on the other side of the country and because it featured presentations by some heavyweights in the industry.So with that in mind, I loaded up the car and headed down to Orlando.
While I did meet some cool people, I have to say that I was kind of disappointed overall. First, let me speak of the positives. 1. It was on the east coast. 2. I already mentioned that I’d met some cool people. 3. I did learn some stuff. 4. I got alot of t-shirts.
Now for the not so good (because I can’t say that anything was really bad). 1. As I continue to grow as a Rails Developer, I want to see code and examples of how to do certain things. There were several presentations that spoke more about theories and things like that. Things that really didn’t interest me as much. 2. The wireless at the hotel SUCKED (I guess that’s the one bad thing I can say).
All in all, I don’t know that I learned much more than I could have learned at the Atlanta Ruby User Group meetings. It was the same content, just brought to me by higher profile developers. Hell, one of the presenters is a member of my same user group.
But I want to emphasize that I don’t want to come down as negative. It was the first year of this conference and I’m so appreciative of the fact that there’s something on the east coast that I can’t be negative. I have no doubt in my mind that the event will get better as the years progress. If nothing else, I can say that I was part of the first.
