The Rails Way Posted on July 09, 2008 at 01:53 PM
I used to see Obie Fernandez as a bit of a snob. I remember when he spoke at Acts_as_conference and he went on this rant about bad rails practices and coding (similar to what he appeared to do at Railsconf). My thinking at the time was “Hey, whatever works”. How dumb was I?
Now that I’m the one that has to look through people’s code, I see what he meant. BOY do I see what he meant. One of the worst things in the world (well, maybe not in the world but its pretty bad) is having to mainta…
Its Been Awhile... Posted on May 24, 2008 at 02:48 AM
... Since my last post. I’ve been pretty busy though. I’m working on a project at work, while still trying to work on the idea that’s going to bring me my millions of dollars. Its coming. I can feel it.
On the development front, I just bought the Deploying Rails Applications book. Even though I deploy apps at my job regularly, I’m going to setup my own server from scratch. Plus, I want to play with mod_rails, and that’s something that I can’t do at work. So, I guess this post is a pigg…
The New Sys Admin Posted on April 23, 2008 at 10:25 AM
Over the past month or so, I’ve been brushing up on my system admin skills, using The Linux Admin Handbook as my guide. And actually, I’m having a pretty good time with it.
Now, I’m not saying that I’m changing my career path or anything like that but with all that I’ve had to learn on the path to Rails-dom, this has been one of the more enjoyable things to learn.
A Year in the Game Posted on April 05, 2008 at 03:15 AM
Well, I guess this month (well, actually March) officially marks a year in the Rails “game”. I mark March as the month because I ordered my first (of many) books from Amazon, a year ago.
That first book was Steve Holzner’s Beginning Ruby on Rails
I chose that book for two reasons – 1. Wrox was my favorite publisher of geek books at the time and 2. It dealt specifically with learning Rails on Windows.
At the time, ...
As Ruby goes up, Rails comes down Posted on March 07, 2008 at 03:29 PM
One thing that was interesting to me while at acts_as_conference was the amount of subtle Rails bashing that went on. While no one wanted to overtly bash Rails, it seems like there were alot of people pushing other frameworks (Ezra, merb, was one of the offenders, in my opinion). And it appears that the easiest way to promote another framework was to bash Rails.
I was reading about Waves ( http://rubywaves.com ) today. And while reading about it, I stumbled acros…
A Week of Ramblings Posted on February 19, 2008 at 06:56 PM
Just some thoughts/observations for the week…
- Ruby is slow
- Merb is the new “it” framework (sh*t, I just got Rails down)
- It seems like 99.9% of Rails developers are Java people
- Along those same lines, it seems that 100% of Rails developers have been doing some kind of development since they were in the womb.
- Regardless of how much I think I know, I’m always reminded that I don’t know as much as I’d like.
- There are parts of The Rails Way that are a taken, word for word, fr…
acts_as_conference Posted on February 13, 2008 at 03:23 AM
I went to my first Rails conference over the weekend. I really wasn’t sure what to expect but I was looking forward to it, partially because it wasn’t on the other side of the country and because it featured presentations by some heavyweights in the industry. So with that in mind, I loaded up the car and headed down to Orlando.
While I did meet some cool people, I have to say that I was kind of disappointed overall. First, let me speak of the positives. 1. It was on the east coast. 2. I a…
My First Post Posted on January 21, 2008 at 11:18 AM
Hello to all. This is the first post of my first blog. And to tell you a little about myself…
I’m a Rails developer of almost one year. I’m fortunate to work for a company that allows me to do Rails work fulltime. So things are cool.
Why am I writing a blog? Beats me. It just seems like the thing to do. Everyone else has one so why not me? I don’t know if I have enough to write about (or enough time to write about my thoughts) but I’ll try to write something at least once a wee…
